Choosing a cock ring: size, material and vibrating rings

Updated October 10, 2026

A cock ring is a ring that goes around the base of the penis, or around the penis and scrotum together. It slows the blood flowing back out a little, so the erection feels firmer and, for many men, lasts longer. A vibrating cock ring adds a small motor on top that rests against the partner's clitoris during sex, which makes it one of the simplest toys for couples. This guide explains the types, how to work out your size and how to wear a ring safely.

What a cock ring does, and what it does not

The ring keeps blood in the erectile tissue a little longer. That gives a firmer, sometimes slightly bigger erection and a more intense feeling. Some men also find they come later, but that varies from person to person and is not a promise.

A cock ring is not a treatment for erection problems. If you have them often, talk to a doctor: the cause can be something worth attention, such as the blood vessels or medication. If you take blood thinners or have a clotting disorder, ask your doctor first whether a ring is safe for you.

The types

  • Stretchy ring: silicone or TPE, no motor. Easy on and off, and the best first ring.
  • Double ring: one ring around the penis and one around the scrotum. Stays in place better and gives more pressure.
  • Vibrating cock ring: a stretchy ring with a motor on top. The pressure for you, the vibration on the clitoris for your partner.
  • Ring with an extra stimulator: with small tongues or a second nub that reaches the clitoris or the perineum.
  • Ring with an app or remote: the partner who is not wearing it chooses the setting.

Rigid rings in metal or hard material are for the experienced: they have to fit exactly and cannot be stretched off quickly. Do not start with one.

The Duelist is the sensible start: stretchy silicone, twelve settings and waterproof enough for the shower. The Picker runs for up to two hours according to the manufacturer, and on a ring that is not a detail: a ring that dies halfway is worse than no ring. The Bathmate Stretch stretches from 24 to 35 mm inside, so it fits many men without measuring. The Jammy is a triple ring with tongues that tap rather than vibrate, each with twelve settings of its own, for anyone who wants more than vibration. The Ringo has an app, so your partner picks the setting; the buttons on the ring also work without a phone.

If you do not know your size yet, a set is the smartest buy: you try several rings and then know which inner size suits you. The rest of the range is under cock rings and vibrating cock rings.

The right size

Measure the circumference at the base of the penis, or around penis and scrotum together if that is where the ring will sit, with a strip of paper or a soft tape measure, while the penis is not erect. Divide that circumference by 3.14: that is roughly the diameter.

  • For a stretchy silicone ring, choose an inner size around that diameter or slightly smaller. It stretches and should feel snug but not tight.
  • For a ring that does not stretch, choose the measured diameter or slightly larger, never smaller.
  • If you are between two sizes, take the larger. A ring that is too loose does little; a ring that is too tight is dangerous.

How to wear a cock ring safely

Put the ring on while the penis is still soft or half hard, with a little water-based lubricant. With a double ring, the scrotum goes through first, carefully, one side at a time, then the penis.

  • Do not wear a ring for longer than twenty to thirty minutes at a time.
  • Take it off straight away if anything goes numb, cold, darkly discoloured or painful.
  • Never fall asleep with a ring on.
  • Silicone rings only with water-based lubricant; silicone lubricant can damage them.

With a condom, the condom goes on first and the ring goes over it at the base. There is more on condom sizes and materials in condoms and intimate care.

Using a vibrating cock ring together

Turn the motor upwards, towards the belly: during penetration in missionary or with the woman on top, it then meets the clitoris. Stay close and move with small rocking movements of the hips rather than long thrusts, and the vibration keeps contact. Turned downwards, the motor vibrates against the wearer's scrotum and perineum.

If this is your first toy together, read toys for couples as well. If you are looking for something that does more for the partner, compare the models in the best couples vibrators.

After use, wash it with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner, take the motor out if it comes out, and dry the charging contacts.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a cock ring stay on?

Twenty to thirty minutes at a time. Take it off sooner as soon as anything feels numb, cold or discoloured, and never fall asleep with it on.

What size cock ring do I need?

Measure the circumference at the base of the soft penis and divide by 3.14. Choose a stretchy ring around that diameter or slightly smaller, and a rigid ring never smaller. A set with several sizes is the easiest way to find out.

Does a cock ring help against premature ejaculation?

For some men it does, because the pressure changes the sensation, but it is no guarantee and no treatment. For that purpose there are also delay products.

Can you wear a cock ring with a condom?

Yes. Condom first, then the ring over it at the base. Use a water-based lubricant, which works with every condom and with silicone.

What does my partner feel from a vibrating cock ring?

During penetration the motor rests against the clitoris, so the vibration is felt directly. Your partner also notices the firmer erection. That is why a vibrating cock ring is the first toy for many couples.
