Steel toys are the heavy ones: plugs, wands, beads, rings and cages in polished stainless steel that weigh three or four times what the same shape weighs in silicone. The weight is the point, and so is the cold: steel feels fuller than its size, stays exactly where it is put, takes temperature from a bowl of water, and cleans completely and lasts for life. This guide explains what steel does that other materials do not, how to choose a size when nothing gives, and how to look after it.

What steel does

Weight: a steel plug is felt every moment it is worn, and a steel wand presses on the G-spot or prostate with a firmness no soft toy manages. Temperature: a few minutes in warm water and it is warm through; a few minutes in the fridge and it is startlingly cold, and it holds either for a long time. Hygiene: non porous, boilable, dishwasher safe without a motor, and shared between partners with nothing more than a wash. And it never wears out.

Sizing

Steel does not compress, so a size that is comfortable in silicone can be a lot in steel. Choose a plug a size smaller than your usual silicone one, and a wand of modest width, under 3.5 centimetres, to start. Jewelled plugs are sized by the widest point; check it, because the base is not what goes in.

Types

Rosebud and jewelled plugs, for wearing. Wands, curved with a bulb, for the G-spot and prostate. Beads on a rigid stem. Cock rings in solid steel, sized by inner diameter and unforgiving of a wrong size. Chastity cages, heavy and strict. Ben wa balls for kegel work.

Using it

Any lubricant works on steel, water based or silicone. Warm it or chill it first, and test on the wrist; the body judges temperature badly inside. Steel rings need a measured size and come off at any swelling. A dropped steel toy chips tile and dents floors, so hold on to it.

Care

Wash with warm soapy water, or boil, or put it in the dishwasher; dry it and keep it in its pouch so it does not scratch or get scratched. Check jewelled plugs for a loose stone now and then.

Frequently asked questions

Is steel better than silicone?

Different. Heavier, colder, firmer, more hygienic and permanent; silicone is softer, warmer and lighter. Most people who try steel keep one piece of it.

Which steel toy first?

A small jewelled plug or a slim curved wand. Both show what weight and temperature do without demanding much.

Is it safe to chill it?

The fridge, yes; the freezer, no. Test on the wrist first.

How do I size a steel cock ring?

Measure the circumference of the flaccid penis and testicles together where the ring will sit, divide by 3.14, and choose that diameter or a little more. When in doubt, larger.

Does it rust?

Stainless steel does not. Dry it after washing and it stays polished for decades.
