Tails

A plug with a tail on it, for pet play or for the look of it. Glow-in-the-dark included. The plug end follows the same rules as any other, so pick the width you already know suits you and check that the base is flared, but the tail adds two things nobody thinks about: weight and leverage. A long faux fur tail pulls downward and backward when you walk, which a short one does not, so a first tail is better short. Silicone tails are easier to keep clean and take a wash; fur is warmer, moves better and should never go near boiling water. Brush it out after use, hang it rather than fold it, and store it away from direct sun, because that is what turns a bright colour dull.

A tail plug is a butt plug with a tail attached to the base: fox, cat, bunny, pony or something stranger, in faux fur, feathers or silicone. The plug does what a plug does, and the tail turns it into a costume, a character and a photograph. This guide covers the plug end, which decides the comfort, the tail end, which decides the look, and how to keep both in good shape.

The plug

Most tail plugs use a metal or silicone plug of classic teardrop shape with a slim neck and a round base the tail fastens to. Metal is heavy for its size, takes temperature and cleans completely; silicone is lighter, softer and warms to the body. Sizes run from small, about 2.8 centimetres across, to large, over 4; a first tail should be small, because it will be worn for longer than an ordinary plug and moved around in.

The tail

Faux fur tails are the classic, long and silky, in animal colours or fantasy ones; the longer the tail, the more it swings and the more it shows. Feather tails are lighter and quieter. Silicone tails, the pony and cat kinds, are one piece with the plug and can be washed with it. A detachable tail is the practical choice: the plug washes on its own and the tail stays dry.

Wearing it

Lubricant on the plug, plenty; the tail does not need any. A tail is worn on all fours, crawling and swishing, or standing for the look, and the neck of the plug has to hold it through that movement, so a plug with a defined neck is better than a bulb. Twenty minutes to an hour is a sensible first wear. If the plug is uncomfortable, it is the plug size, not the tail.

Pet play

Tails go with ears, collars, paws and masks, and this category is where most people's pet play starts. There is no wrong way to do it: a tail alone for a partner's amusement is as valid as a full puppy set with a leash.

Care

Wash the plug with warm water and soap, or boil metal and silicone plugs. Keep fur tails dry; brush them with a soft brush, and if one must be washed, cool water, a little shampoo, and hang it to dry. Store tails hanging or laid straight so the fur does not crease.

Frequently asked questions

Which size plug?

Small for a first tail, under 3 centimetres across, because it will be worn longer and moved in more than a plug on its own. Size up when it feels like nothing.

Metal or silicone plug?

Metal for weight, temperature and easy cleaning; silicone for lightness and softness. Both work; metal is the usual choice for detachable tails.

Can the tail get wet?

Fur, no, if it can be avoided; silicone tails, yes. Keep fur away from lubricant and out of the shower.

How long can I wear it?

As long as the plug is comfortable, an hour or two at first. Take it out at any numbness or pain.

Does the tail come off?

On most tail plugs, yes, for washing the plug; on one piece silicone tails, no. Check the product page.
