Batteries and chargers are the least exciting things in the shop and the ones that decide whether a toy works tonight. Half the toys sold still take batteries, AA, AAA and the small button cells in bullets and rings, and the rechargeable half comes with a cable that is easy to lose and often unique to the brand. This guide explains which battery goes where, why the cheap ones let you down, and how to look after rechargeable toys so the battery lasts.
Which battery
AA and AAA alkaline for wands, larger vibrators and remote controls; the pack size is on the product page. Button cells, LR44, AG13 and similar, for bullets, finger vibrators and cock rings, usually three in a stack. Alkaline batteries give more power for longer than zinc ones, and a vibrator on a weak battery is a weak vibrator, so buy alkaline and buy the brand you know.
Rechargeable toys
Most rechargeable toys use a magnetic contact or a small pin socket with a USB cable on the other end; the cable is specific to the brand and sometimes to the model, which is why replacement cables are sold here. Charge from a computer port or a phone adapter of 5 volts; fast chargers and high wattage adapters are not made for toys. A full charge takes one to two hours and runs the toy for one to two hours.
Looking after the battery
Charge before the first use, do not leave the toy on the charger for days, and charge it every couple of months if it is not being used, because a lithium battery left empty for a year may not come back. Store it at half charge if it is going away for a while. Keep the charging contacts clean and dry; lubricant on the pins is the usual reason a toy will not charge.
Batteries in toys that sit in a drawer
Take them out. Alkaline batteries leak over months and the leak kills the motor. Button cells the same.
Disposal
Batteries, rechargeable toys and their cables are electronic waste and go to a collection point, not the bin; in the EU the shop you bought from takes them back.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my toy weak?
The batteries. Fresh alkaline batteries, or a full charge, restore most toys; a cheap zinc battery gives half the power.
Can I use any USB cable?
Only if the plug fits: most toys use a magnetic contact or a pin unique to the brand. A cable with a standard USB plug on one end still needs the right end on the other.
Can I charge it with a fast charger?
Better not. A 5 volt phone adapter or a computer port; high wattage chargers can damage the small battery.
How long does the battery last?
One to two hours of use per charge, and several years of charges if it is not left flat. A toy that stops holding charge after a year was usually stored empty.
Is it safe to leave charging overnight?
Most toys stop charging when full, but the habit shortens battery life. Charge in the evening and unplug at bedtime.
