Ten metres of terylene rope at 0,7 centimetres, which is the standard thickness for tying and the one most instruction videos assume. Seven millimetres is thin enough to knot neatly and thick enough not to bite, and that balance is why it became the default.

Pure synthetic means it is smooth, strong and washable, with none of the smell or shedding of natural fibre. It also means it slides, so a knot that is not finished properly will work loose. Ten metres is one tie; a harness needs several lengths. Same rules as any rope: off the throat, off the inside of the wrists, check for cold fingers, and safety scissors within reach before you start.
