Ten metres of soft cotton rope in black. Cotton is the sensible first rope: it is soft enough not to mark quickly, it holds a knot without locking solid, and it can be cut off in a second with the scissors that should be lying next to you anyway.

Ten metres is one column tie or a pair of wrist and ankle ties, not a full body harness; those want thirty metres or more in several lengths. Keep the pressure on muscle and away from the inside of wrists and the front of the neck. Check for cold fingers or numbness every few minutes, and untie at once if either shows up. Wash it by hand, air dry it and coil it rather than knotting it for storage.
