A vibrating dildo is a dildo first and a vibrator second. The shape, size and base are chosen the way you would choose any dildo; the motor is an extra that adds pressure and buzz at the tip and at the entrance. This guide is about the choices the motor adds: where it sits, how strong it is, what it does to the material, and how to keep the toy alive.
What vibration adds to a dildo
Vibration is felt most where the toy presses hardest: the head against the G spot or prostate, and the shaft against the entrance. Deep inside, most of it is lost. So a vibrating dildo does most for people who like pressure on a spot, and least for those who mainly want fullness; for the second group a solid dual density dildo is the better buy and the motor is money spent for little.
Some models pair the shaft motor with a clitoral arm or a base that buzzes against the body, which turns the toy into something closer to a rabbit and is the version most people end up using.
Motor position and character
A motor in the tip aims vibration at the spot the head presses on and is the better choice for internal use. A motor in the base is felt through the whole shaft and by a hand or a harness wearer; the tip gets less. Rumbly, low frequency motors travel through soft silicone; high pitched buzzy ones are lost in it. When a page describes the vibration as deep or rumbly, that is the one to prefer in a soft realistic toy.
Count the steady levels rather than the patterns. Five or more levels with a gentle lowest one are worth more than twenty patterns.
Material, and the motor's effect on it
Platinum silicone is the standard. Dual density realistic toys with a motor put the electronics in the firm core and keep a soft skin, which works well. Very soft single density silicone dampens the motor; firmer silicone carries it better and feels less lifelike. Avoid TPE and jelly vibrating dildos: porous, and the motor housing is hard to clean.
Size and shape
Read insertable length and girth as with any dildo and buy smaller than you think for a first one. A curve toward the front wall matters more in a vibrating toy than in a solid one, because that is where the motor does its work. A defined head adds pressure; a smooth taper is gentler.
Base, suction cup, harness
A flared base keeps the toy safe for anal use and holds the charging point. Suction cups on vibrating toys shake loose faster than on solid ones; use them on smooth tile and do not rely on them for vigorous use. A flat, harness ready base lets a partner wear the toy and feel the motor as well.
Battery, controls, water
Rechargeable with a magnetic contact on the base is the current standard; battery compartments are a sign of an older or cheaper design. Controls should be findable by touch on the base. Waterproof means the bath; splashproof means the tap. A travel lock is useful if the toy goes in luggage.
Care
Wash with warm water and mild soap, keeping soap out of the charging contacts. Never boil or put a motorised toy in the dishwasher. Water based lubricant only. Charge fully before storing for a long time and top up every few months.
Frequently asked questions
Vibrating or solid dildo?
Solid for fullness and for a first dildo. Vibrating for G spot or prostate pressure, for clitoral contact from the base, and for harness play where both partners feel it.
How loud is it?
On low and medium levels most current models are quiet enough for a shared flat. Tip motors in soft silicone are the quietest; base motors and thrusting mechanisms are louder.
Is it safe for anal use?
Only with a proper flared base. Many vibrating dildos have one; those with a narrow suction cup only are not safe for anal use.
Can I use silicone lubricant?
No. It slowly damages a silicone shaft and can creep into the seals around the motor. Water based only.
How long does the battery last?
Usually one to two hours of use from a two hour charge. If it drops well below that after a year, the toy is nearing the end of its life; keeping it charged during storage slows that.
