Bullet & Egg Vibrators

A bullet is the smallest vibrator there is: a finger sized cylinder with a motor and not much else. An egg is its rounder cousin, often on a cord or a remote. Between them they cover more ground than any other type: clitoral use, nipples, the base of a penis, inside a harness ring, inside a sleeve, in a handbag. They are also the cheapest way to find out what kind of vibration you like before spending more.

Bullet or egg

A bullet is held in the hand and used on the outside of the body. Its small tip concentrates vibration on one spot, which suits people who like precise clitoral stimulation and can be too sharp for those who prefer broad pressure. Many come with silicone sleeves or textured caps that spread the sensation.

An egg is made to be worn: inside the vagina, in underwear, or against the body during sex, with the control on a cord or a remote. It gives a broader, more diffuse buzz and is the shape for hands free use.

Motor character matters more than size

Small motors tend to be buzzy: high frequency, surface level, and numbing after a while. The better bullets use a rumbly motor that vibrates at a lower frequency and reaches deeper into the tissue. The difference between a cheap bullet and a good one is almost entirely this. If a page describes the vibration as deep or rumbly, that is the one to prefer; if a bullet is very cheap and very small, expect buzz.

Power, levels and the lowest setting

Look for at least three steady levels and a lowest one that is gentle enough to start with. Patterns are less useful in a bullet than in a larger toy because the whole point is direct control. A bullet that only has one speed is for a handbag, not for the bedside table.

Remote and app control

Eggs and some bullets come with a remote for a partner to hold, or an app for distance. A remote works within a few metres and through clothing; an app works anywhere with a signal, but expect the connection to drop now and then. For play in public, the noise on a low level matters more than the range: choose a model described as quiet and test it under clothes at home first.

Battery and waterproofing

Rechargeable bullets with a magnetic or sealed USB charge are the standard now; button cell models are cheaper and weaker, and the battery cover is where water gets in. Fully waterproof bullets can go in the bath, and because they are so small they are the easiest vibrator to use there.

Material

The body is usually ABS plastic or metal, with a silicone coating on better models; all of these are non porous and easy to clean. Avoid jelly or soft plastic sleeves that are not silicone; they hold smell and cannot be sterilised.

Care

Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap, or rinse under the tap if waterproof, and dry fully. Keep water out of a button cell battery compartment. Water based lubricant with silicone sleeves. Store in the pouch it came with so the button does not get pressed in a drawer.
