Whips, Crops & Paddles

Impact toys are the part of the collection that looks the most alarming and is, used properly, among the gentlest: a paddle on the buttocks stings for a second and warms for an hour, and most of what happens is anticipation. The difference between the types is the kind of sensation, from a soft thud to a sharp sting, and the skill needed to use them. This guide starts at the gentle end and explains what each one does.

Thud or sting

Every impact toy sits somewhere between thud, a deep, spread out impact that feels like a heavy hand, and sting, a sharp, surface level bite. Broad, heavy and soft gives thud: a wide leather paddle, a suede flogger with many falls. Narrow, light and stiff gives sting: a thin crop, a cane, a single tail. Most people prefer thud to begin with and find sting an acquired taste, so a first purchase should be broad and soft.

Paddles

The simplest and the most forgiving. A wide paddle in padded leather or soft silicone gives thud and is hard to misuse. Wooden paddles are heavier and sharper and leave marks; faux fur on one side and leather on the other gives two sensations in one. A paddle with a handle long enough for a full grip and a face at least the width of a hand is the right first impact toy.

Floggers

A handle with many falls, in suede, leather, rubber or rope. Many soft, wide falls give thud; few narrow, stiff falls give sting. Suede and soft leather with 20 or more falls is the beginner's flogger and the one most people keep. Floggers take a little practice: a figure of eight from the wrist, aimed at the fleshy parts, never the spine or kidneys.

Crops, canes and whips

A riding crop is a stiff shaft with a small leather tip; it stings and it is precise, which makes it good for teasing and less good for a first spanking. Canes are for people who know exactly what they are doing. Single tail whips and bullwhips are a discipline of their own and are not beginner toys under any description.

Where and how

Buttocks and upper thighs, the fleshy, padded areas, take impact well. Never the spine, kidneys, tailbone, joints or anywhere a bone sits under the skin. Start lighter than seems worthwhile, build slowly, and let each stroke land before the next. A warm up of light strokes makes everything after it feel better and bruise less. Agree a safe word before the first stroke and check in often.

Material and marks

Leather and suede are the classic materials, soften with use and last for years. Silicone paddles and floggers are washable and sterilisable, useful if the toy touches lubricant or skin that is broken. Rubber stings more than it looks. Wood and acrylic mark; if marks are unwanted, stay with padded leather and suede.

Care

Leather and suede are wiped, dried and kept out of the sun; a little leather balm now and then keeps them soft. Silicone and rubber wash with soap and water. Hang floggers by the handle so the falls stay straight.
