Lingerie is the one category where the size label decides whether the purchase works. Everything else, the fabric, the cut and the closure, is a matter of taste. Measure first, then choose the style.
Measure before you choose a size
Take three measurements with a tape over your underwear: around the fullest part of the bust, around the ribcage just under the bust, and around the widest part of the hips. Compare those numbers with the size table on the product page rather than with the size you usually buy.
Most of this category comes from brands whose sizes run small compared with high street clothing. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one. Straps can be shortened, a garment that does not close cannot be fixed.
One size and combined sizes
Some pieces are sold as one size, which in practice covers roughly a European 36 to 40 in stretch fabrics. Others carry a combined label such as S/M or L/XL, meaning one garment cut to fit that whole span thanks to elastic panels and adjustable straps. Where a piece has a combined size, the product page says so under the size selector, and the size table gives the measurements that count.
Plus size versions are cut differently rather than simply scaled up, with wider straps, more support in the cups and longer panels.
Styles and what they do
A babydoll is loose from the bust down and forgiving around the waist. A teddy or body is one piece and follows the figure closely. A bodystocking covers from shoulder to foot in fine mesh, so stretch matters more than size. A corset shapes the waist with rigid boning and closes with hooks or laces, while a bustier is softer and mainly lifts and supports. Suspender belts and stockings are usually bought together, and are worth checking for a wide, non slip band at the top.
Fabric and care
Lace looks best but snags easily. Mesh and microfibre stretch further and hold their shape. Satin and wet look are smooth and heavier, and neither one breathes much. Wet look and latex style fabrics should be kept away from heat and from oil based products.
Wash by hand in cool water with a mild detergent, or use a laundry bag on a delicates cycle. Never tumble dry, and never iron elastic or wet look fabric. Hang or lay flat to dry.
Frequently asked questions
Which size should I order?
The one the size table gives for your measurements, not the size you wear in everyday clothing. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Does one size really fit everyone?
It fits a range, usually around a European 36 to 40, because the fabric stretches. If your measurements sit outside that range, look for a piece with an explicit size table or a plus size version.
How do I wash lingerie?
By hand in cool water with a mild detergent, or in a laundry bag on a delicates programme. No tumble dryer, no iron on elastic, and dry it flat or on a hanger.
Can lingerie be returned?
Intimate garments can only be returned unworn, with the hygiene strip and all labels still attached, and in the original packaging. Try pieces on over your own underwear.
