Anal beads are a string of balls, usually growing in size toward the base, that are inserted one at a time and pulled out slowly, often at the moment of orgasm. The sensation is different from a plug: it is the passing of each bead through the entrance that does the work, not the fullness. That makes beads the gentlest way in for beginners and a favourite of experienced people who want something a plug does not give.
What to look for first
A handle or a ring at the end is not optional. It keeps the string from being drawn inside and gives you something to pull. One solid piece of silicone, beads and handle cast together, is the safest and easiest to clean. Beads threaded on a cord or a chain trap dirt between them and are hard to sterilise; keep those for the look, not for regular use.
Size and progression
Beginner strings start around 15 millimetres and grow to 25 or 30 at the base. Experienced users go to 40 or more. The step between beads matters as much as the largest one: a gentle progression lets the body adjust with each bead, a big jump halfway is where people stop. Insertable length is the length of the beaded part; 20 to 30 centimetres covers most strings and only the beads you want need to go in.
Material
Platinum silicone is soft, flexible, non porous and the right choice for a first string. It bends with the body and can be boiled. Glass and stainless steel beads are rigid, heavy and very smooth; they hold temperature and go in with little lubricant, and are for people who already know their size. Avoid jelly and PVC: porous, and a string that goes inside the body and comes out again needs to be sterilisable.
Flexible or rigid
A flexible silicone string follows the curve of the rectum and is comfortable to leave in during other things. A rigid string of glass or steel is easier to control bead by bead and gives a firmer feeling of each one passing. Some silicone strings have a firm core for the middle ground.
Vibrating beads
A motor in the base or in the largest bead adds buzz at the entrance and turns the string into something closer to a plug that moves. Look for a rechargeable, fully waterproof model with a simple control on the handle. Vibration is a bonus here, not the point; a good solid string is better than a poor vibrating one.
How to use them
Plenty of water based lubricant on every bead. Insert one at a time, pausing after each, and stop at the bead that feels like enough; there is no rule that says the whole string goes in. Leave them in during other stimulation, and draw them out slowly at or just before orgasm. Faster is more intense; slower is more comfortable. Never pull hard or fast on a rigid string.
Care
Wash with warm water and soap right after use, paying attention to the narrow parts between beads. Silicone, glass and steel can be boiled; a vibrating string is washed by hand. Dry fully and store in a bag, away from other silicone.
Frequently asked questions
Are beads better than a plug for a beginner?
Often, yes. The smallest beads are smaller than any plug, you decide how many go in, and the sensation on the way out is the thing beginners most enjoy.
How many beads should go in?
As many as feel good. Three or four is common; the largest ones at the base are there for people who want them.
Can I use them during sex?
Yes, and it is one of the best ways to use them: inserted before, drawn out by a partner at the right moment.
Can I leave them in for a while?
Silicone strings can stay in for an hour or so of play. They are not made for wearing under clothes; a plug does that job better.
Glass, steel or silicone?
Silicone for a first string and for flexibility. Glass or steel for weight, temperature and a firmer feeling of each bead, once you know what size suits you.
