Cuffs & Restraints
Vegan leather, neoprene or soft webbing, all with quick release. Wrist and ankle sets, under-bed systems and thigh cuffs. The width of the cuff is what decides whether it stays comfortable: a narrow strap cuts into the wrist as soon as someone pulls, a wide one spreads the same force over more skin. Padded neoprene is the kindest for a long session, vegan leather looks the part and stiffens over time. Check that you can open every buckle with one hand in the dark, keep a pair of safety scissors within reach, and never fasten anything around a neck.

Restraints are the simplest way into power play: one person gives up the use of their hands, the other decides what happens next. The toy itself is the least important part. What matters is that it holds, that it can be undone in seconds, and that it does not damage a wrist, an ankle or a bed. This guide covers the types, the safety rules that experienced people follow without thinking, and what to buy first.
Types, from soft to serious
Soft cuffs in padded fabric, faux fur or neoprene with a Velcro or buckle closure are where almost everyone starts. They hold well enough, cannot cut in, and come off in a second.
Leather cuffs with a buckle and a D ring last for years, look the part and take more strain; lined leather is kinder to the skin. Metal handcuffs are for the look and the sound, not for pulling against; they bruise wrists fast and the key gets lost, so keep them for short scenes.
Bondage tape sticks only to itself, not to skin or hair, and makes a restraint of any shape. Rope is a skill of its own; a starter set with soft cotton or jute and a safety shear is the right first step. Spreader bars keep ankles or wrists apart at a fixed width. Under bed systems run straps under the mattress to four cuffs and fit any bed without hardware.
What makes a restraint safe
Quick release beats everything else. A cuff that can be undone one handed, by feel, in a hurry, is a safe cuff. Padding and width spread the load: a wide, lined cuff can be pulled against; a thin strap or a metal ring cannot. Nothing should tighten under load, which rules out slip knots and cheap handcuffs without a double lock.
Two fingers should fit between the cuff and the skin. Check hands and feet every few minutes for cold, tingling or colour change and release at once if any appears. Keep safety shears within reach whenever rope or tape is involved, and never leave a restrained person alone.
Fit and size
Wrist cuffs are usually adjustable across a wide range; ankle cuffs are larger and not interchangeable. Measure at the narrowest point and compare with the range on the product page. Collars with a leash are measured around the neck with two fingers of room, and are for leading, never for pulling against.
Sets and what goes with them
A first set usually pairs wrist and ankle cuffs with connectors or an under bed strap. A blindfold changes the scene more than any second toy and costs little. Add a spreader bar or a hogtie connector later, once both people know what they enjoy.
Care
Fabric and neoprene cuffs go in a mesh bag on a cool cycle. Leather is wiped, dried and occasionally fed with leather balm; metal hardware is dried to stop rust. Rope is washed by hand, hung to dry and inspected for fraying. Bondage tape is single use per scene.
Frequently asked questions
What should a beginner buy first?
Soft cuffs with Velcro or a buckle, a connector strap, and a blindfold. Comfortable, quick to release and enough for a long time.
Are metal handcuffs safe?
For a short scene without pulling, and only with a double lock and the key on the bedside table. For anything longer, padded cuffs.
Do under bed restraints work on any bed?
On any bed with a mattress the straps can pass under. They rely on the weight of the mattress, so a very light or very thick mattress may need the straps anchored to the frame.
How tight is right?
Two fingers between cuff and skin. Tighter causes bruising and numbness; looser slips off. Check every few minutes.
Do we need a safe word?
Yes, agreed before the first cuff goes on, and a gesture for when the mouth is covered. Stopping when it is used is not up for discussion.
