Vibrating dildos: realistic, suction cup and remote models compared

Choose a vibrating dildo if you want the shape and fullness of a dildo with vibration on top, usually with a suction cup or a base that fits a harness; choose a realistic vibrator if vibration comes first and you want something lighter in your hand. For a first one, aim for about 16 cm insertable and 4 cm across, like the SheQu Haydon, or the simpler Chisa Mantric Muse. For hands-free play pick a suction cup, for a partner a remote or a harness-ready base.

Vibrating dildo or realistic vibrator

The two overlap and makers use both names, but they are built differently:

• A vibrating dildo is a dildo first: a realistic shape, often with testicles, a firm or dual density body and a suction cup or flat base, so it can stand on its own or go into a harness. The motor is an extra.
• A realistic vibrator is a vibrator first: penis-shaped but lighter, with the motor and the dial or button in the base and usually no suction cup. You hold it, and the vibration is the main event.

Insertable length and girth

The length in a title is usually the total length, base and testicles included. The Haydon is 21.5 cm in total but 16 cm insertable, the Tommy 22.5 cm and 15.5 cm.

Dual density, liquid silicone, PVC and TPE

• Dual density is a firm core under a softer outer layer: it gives a little like skin, while the core keeps the toy upright on its suction cup.
• Liquid silicone is a soft, smooth grade of silicone. Like all silicone it is non-porous, so it cleans completely and lasts for years.
• PVC and TPE are softer and cheaper but porous, so they need a proper wash and full drying after every use.

Suction cup and harness use

A suction cup holds on smooth surfaces such as tile, glass or a smooth floor, not on wood grain or fabric. Clean the surface first; a drop of water on the rim helps it seal. Riding a toy on a suction cup lets you set depth and pace yourself.

Remote control and app models

A remote makes a vibrating dildo a toy for two: your partner changes the setting and you never reach down. Wired remotes, as on the Mantric Muse and the Myron, never need pairing; wireless ones, as on the Haydon, give more freedom. App control is rare on vibrating dildos, so for play through your phone look at app and remote controlled vibrators.

Waterproof, batteries and charging

• IPX7 survives a full bath, as the Hreindyri does. IPX6 covers splashes and a rinse, not a bath.
• Rechargeable toys need no batteries. Keep the charging point dry and only charge a dry toy.
• Battery models such as the King Cock and the Myron take AAA cells. Take them out before longer storage, so nothing leaks.

How to use a vibrating dildo safely

• Use plenty of lube and start on the lowest setting; thrusting and rotation feel stronger inside than in your hand.
• Only use a toy anally if its flared base or suction cup cannot slip in, and wash it or change the condom before it goes from anal to vaginal use.
• Test a warming toy against the inside of your wrist first.
• Stop when something hurts.

Cleaning and storage

Wash the toy after every use with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner and let it dry completely. Never boil a toy with a motor, and do not submerge one that is not rated for it. A condom over a porous PVC or TPE toy makes sharing easier to keep clean. Store silicone toys apart so the surfaces do not stick.

Which lube to use
